Shrews miss chance as Pompey distance Gills

Shrewsbury missed out on a chance to top League One as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Gillingham.

Abu Ogogo fired the Shrews into the lead on 14 minutes when he converted a cross from Shaun Whalley.

However, Mark Byrne hauled the Gills level with eight minutes remaining when he found the top corner following a lay-off by Max Elmer.

Paul Hurst’s outfit remain one point adrift of Blackburn Rovers at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, 11th-placed Gillingham slid further adrift of Pompey, who were busy beating Fleetwood Town 2-1.

Kenny Jackett’s Blues are now in ninth spot on 49 points. That’s two shy of the play-off places and three ahead of both Peterborough and the Gills.
