Kenny Jackett hailed Tom Naylor's Pompey bite following his man-of-the-match display at Coventry.
The Blues increased their lead at the top of League One to three points following last night's 1-0 triumph.
Ronan Curtis grabbed the decider during first-half stoppage-time at the Ricoh Arena, although it took a dogged showing after the break to ensure the success.
Naylor was at the heart of the battling Blues, digging in and breaking up play, despite carrying a yellow card from the first half.
And Jackett was delighted with the combative performer who continues to be a pivotal presence.
