Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth admits his position over season may be at odds with how Portsmouth rivals vote

Gareth Ainsworth insisted he wants to see out the League One campaign on the pitch.

But the Wycombe Wanderers manager admitted he’d understand if his club choose an alternative position when clubs vote on the way forward next week.

Ainsworth explained his club have ‘serious concerns’ about their financial position if the third-tier season is played out on the pitch.

But despite the Chairboys finishing in the play-offs in a points-per-game scenario he’d like to see the term to a traditional conclusion.

Ainsworth told Sky Sports: ‘We still think we had a good chance on the pitch of getting one of the automatics.

‘We have 10 games to go and seven in the bottom half of the table.

‘We’ve been in the top two for 20 weeks of the season and the only reason we dropped out of the top three was because we had Bury scheduled the week before lockdown and everyone went past us.

‘We had plenty to play for on the pitch.’

Ainsworth was unable to confirm his personal view would be reflected in the club’s vote when it takes place in the coming days.

That’s because American owner Rob Couhig harbours issues with continuing and the former QPR man explained he’d support a vote to curtail.

He added: ‘My owner will make that decision (how to vote).

‘He will look at the finances to what it will cost to keep playing the season.

‘Playing the play-offs will cost money. There’s testing, training and unfurloughing players.

‘From a competitive point of view of course we want to play, but financially if it doesn’t make sense I understand my owner’s decision.

‘I would love to carry on that season but I totally understand the position of many clubs.

‘I know what I want to do as a football manager, but I also know my owner has some serious concerns about the finances.’
