Wolves make decision on Portsmouth faithful ahead of rearranged Molineux game
Pompey head to Wolves next month for the first time since the Blues beat the Old Guard in the Premier League in 2009
Pompey fans heading to Wolves next month will be getting a different view of the action than what they might have anticipated.
Traditionally, the Old Gold have housed away supporters in the Steve Bull Lower stand at Molineux - a section of the ground that famously runs alongside the pitch and has a standard allocation of around 2,750.
The Blues have been assigned just over 2,000 tickets for the Championship fixture that has been ‘frustratingly’ rearranged twice and will finally take place on Tuesday, October 20 (7.45pm).
Yet the travelling Fratton faithful will not be taking their seats in the typical away end at Molineux. Instead, they’ve been shifted to a quadrant that sits between the Steve Bull and Stan Cullis stands.
The idea behind the move is to allow more Wolves fans the opportunity to attend home games given that minimum Championship away ticket allocations are smaller than those in the Premier League.
Housing away supporters in the Steve Bull Lower stand has also been a longstanding concern at Wolves.
Indeed, it’s claimed head coaches - including current boss Cesar Peixoto - have often raised the potential impact of visiting fans being positioned prominently along the side of the pitch on games.
It’s understood that not all visitors to Molineux will experience the Stan Cullis Quadrant that awaits Pompey supporters.
Rather, each fixture will be dependent on safety considerations and an agreement from the club’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) and police.
While just over 2,000 Blackburn Rovers fans were shifted for their trip to Molineux on the opening weekend of the season, both Stoke and West Brom supporters took up traditional places within the stadium.
Pompey tickets for the forthcoming game against Wolves go on sale from 10am on Wednesday morning. Tickets are priced at £33 (adult), £23 (over-64), £21.50 (under-23), £10.50 (under-18) and £5 (under-14).
The game at Molineux will be the first between the Blues and the Old Gold in the Black Country since October 3, 2009.
On that day Hassan Yebda’s 19th-minute effort sealed victory for the Blues in the Premier League and extended Pompey’s unbeaten run at Molineux to six games.
