And with just four new arrivals through the door to date at Fratton Park, there’s plenty of work still to do transfer-wise – with the Blues’ forward department looking threadbare, to say the least.
Hopefully, we’ll see a few additions made between now and the season-opener against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, July 30.
But if not, how would the Pompey starting XI and bench look if only players currently contracted to the club were available?
Here’s how we think that line-up would look...

13. Joe Rafferty - sub 2
Rafferty would have to make do with a place on the bench, given his lack of pre-season action to date. It will be interesting to see how his battle with Swanson unfolds, though. Meanwhile, his presence at Fratton Park will signal the end of Kieron Freeman's time on the south coast. Picture: Rogan/Fever Pitch Photo: Rogan

14. Denver Hume - sub 3
Pompey fans have seen glimpses of what Hume can offer since his January move from Sunderland. But injury has so far hampered his Blues stay. As a result, he's well behind Ogilvie in the pecking order. Photo: Portsmouth FC

15. Jay Mingi - sub 4
The midfielder was a regular member on the bench over the second half of last season. He currently remains there - but there's a noticeable difference. Cowley won't be afraid to use him now, with the former Charlton and West Ham youngster showing plenty in pre-season what he can offer to the side. Has blossomed in recent months. Photo: Jason Brown

16. Ryan Tunnicliffe - sub 5
The midfielder will find himself disappointed to be named on the bench, but the middle of the Park is Pompey's strongest department by far Photo: Jason Brown
