Then there’s those who were afforded the privilege of playing at PO4 - and giving us memories to forever cherish in the process.
We’ve pulled together the words of those who’ve verbalised what a special football club this remains, in some memorable quotes summing up the fabric of Pompey.

It’s unbelievable. I must also say they didn’t stop singing after being four down. You could feel the tradition that is in this derby. I think I have never had such an atmosphere in a stadium so far and I have seen a lot in my entire footballing career. It was a very special game for me also. Photo: Ronny Hartmann/Getty Images

The Stockport atmosphere (at Fratton Park) was as good as people reminisce about. It was constant, non-stop, growing louder as the game went on. You would never believe 8,622 people were present to conjure up this cacophony of noise reverberating around. Everybody sang, not just one or two, everybody. It was so special. I have played at Wembley in a Coca-Cola Cup final, featured in a play-off final against Crystal Palace and, while at Birmingham, had to win at Huddersfield Town in the final match of the season to take the Division Two title. Well, the Stockport atmosphere was right up there among such occasions.

I’ve a huge connection with the football club, always have done, always will do because of what it meant to me at the age I joined, the success, to be part of arguably the most successful time in recent times. That was massive for me. I still think they are wonderful people, wonderful supporters. I went to the Bolton game on Monday, it’s the first time I’ve been back to Fratton Park for such a long time. It brought back a lot of memories, it’s a good feeling in that stadium, I have so many wonderful memories of my time at that football club. I still think those supporters are up there with the best in the country. I had forgotten the atmosphere at Fratton Park, the atmosphere on Monday was electric, it was brilliant. I loved everything about my time there, it’s just an amazing place with great people - and I wish John Mousinho nothing but the best of success this season. | None

I loved my time at Fratton Park, in my four-and-a-half years we had the whole roller coaster ride, near the top of the Premier League, winning the FA Cup and then dipped down with financial problems and some hard times. It’s a time of my life where I made some absolutely great friends and met wonderful Portsmouth people, the whole experience was fantastic. During my 20 years in football, Pompey was definitely my favourite time. It was not always clear skies with us but that first season, especially, stands out massively. I get the impression the fans liked me. They are enthusiastic about their team and understand their football – so obviously like good footballers like me! | Jason Brown/ProSportsImages
