That’s followed a substantial overhaul this summer as Pompey brought in 14 new faces to supplement a decent core of players already at the club.
But how have those men fared so far? We’ve rated John Mousinho’s squad on their performances to date.
5. Conor Shaughnessy - 7.5
An unlikely comeback after failing to make the squad against Bristol Rovers, but has performed impressively since marrying stoic qualities with some eye-catching football stepping out from the back. Photo: Jason Brown
6. Ryley Towler - 6
Started the season in the middle of the back line, but been usurped by Shaughnessy with his greater experience perhaps fancied. All part of the learning curve for the favourite, though, who has time to grow. Photo: Jason Brown
7. Regan Poole - 9
What a revelation the defender has been. Easy to see why Lincoln fans were so upset to see Poole arrive at Fratton Park, after his continually outstanding displays. Dogged and tenacious while offering quality passing or driving forward. More of the same please. Photo: Jason Brown
8. Sean Raggett - 7
Tremendously unlucky not to start in the league yet and more a reflection of Poole's excellence. Performed impressively whenever called upon - including two goals in the Trophy against Fulham. Photo: Jason Brown
