Portsmouth 'frustration' registered with Uefa after Wolves rescheduling debacle

Pompey travel to Molineux on October 20 - but only after the Championship fixture was twice rescheduled

Pompey’s frustration with their rescheduled Championship fixture against Wolves has been lodged with Uefa.

Blues chief executive Andy Cullen has confirmed football’s European governing body was informed of the exasperation caused by the game having to be postponed, not once but twice, by the Football League (EFL) following a complaint filed with them.

The EFL has since been in contact with Uefa to forward concerns that its European competitions can show a lack of regard for domestic schedules.

Pompey were initially scheduled to travel to Wolves’ Molineux ground on Wednesday, September 9, only for the contest to be pushed back to September 16 after Cesar Peixoto’s side were told they would instead travel to Everton in the third round of the Carabao Cup on the same night.

Yet the Old Guard’s trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium also had to be rescheduled in order for city rivals Liverpool to host their Champions League group-phase fixture against Atletico Madrid. The Reds and the Toffees are unable to play at home on the same night.

Wednesday, September 16 was then decided as the date needed for the Everton v Wolves game to finally take place, forcing Pompey to re-arrange their trip to Molineux yet again.

This prompted a strongly-worded statement from the Blues, where they expressed extreme frustration with the circumstances surrounding the still-to-be-played fixture.

Fingers crossed, the Blues now make the trip to Wolves for the first time since 2009 on Tuesday, October 20 - one of eight games they’ll be forced to play in 28 games.

In the meantime, Uefa have been informed of the disruption caused - not just to the Pompey management and team, but also the fans.

Writing in his programme notes ahead of Saturday’s game against Blackburn Rovers - Pompey last fixture before the three-week long international break - Cullen said: ‘The continued growth of FIFA and Uefa competitions is placing significant pressure on the domestic schedule.

‘Most recently, our planned September fixture away at Wolves was twice postponed because of Uefa’s split scheduling of Champions League and Europa League matches.

‘This caused considerable inconvenience for fans, while disrupting the club’s staffing and travel plans.

‘Although the circumstances were outside our direct control, I fully recognise the frustration caused and that supporters were messed around more than once.

‘We have made our views known to the EFL, who have in turn expressed their disappointment to Uefa at the lack of regard shown for the domestic schedule.’
