However, that doesn’t mean that future planning behind the scenes are on hold.
The Blues will continue to discuss potential new players that could be recruited – and that’s regardless of whether Kenny Jackett earns a new contract beyond the season’s end.
Head of recruitment Phil Boardman will be watching players across England, as well as scouring a varity of leagues across Europe.
Free agents have proven their weight in gold for Pompey in recent seasons. The likes of Tom Naylor, Lee Brown, Craig MacGillivray and Sean Raggett were all recruited for absolutely nothing.
The Blues will undoubtedly be keeping tabs on who they could pick up for a bargain.
And if it is a player outside of England, they’re now able to sign a pre-contract before joining on July 1.
It's something that Scottish clubs have already taken advantage of. Rangers have agreed deals with Bournemouth pair Nnamdi Ofoborh and Jack Simpson, while Celtic have recruited Liam Shaw from Sheffield Wednesday.
But what about Pompey prising players from the SPL to Fratton Park before the season is out?
We've had a look at some of names that could be on the radar….

1. Tommy Hoban - Aberdeen
The former Watford centre-back has bounced back brilliantly after a long-term knee injury. He's scored two goals in 33 games for the fourth-placed Dons. He's played in the Championship earlier in his career. Photo: Mark Runnacles

2. Jackson Irvine - Hibernian
After leaving Hull at the end of last season, the Aussie midfielder spent six months as a free agent before earning a short-term deal at Easter Road. Irvine's already made seven appearances for Jack Ross' third-placed side, though, and impressed. Photo: Mark Runnacles

3. Allan Campbell - Motherwell
Millwall were reportedly interested in the Scotland under-21 international during last month's transfer window. Campbell's already made well more than 100 appearances for the Well despite only being 22. Photo: Ian MacNicol

4. Jermain Defoe - Rangers
Surely a return would be out of the question?! Defoe made a retirement U-turn last summer in attempt to win a first league title of his career. He's set to achieve that with the Gers and may want to bow out on a high. However, the 38-year-old may well feel he still has another season of scoring goals regularly in him. Photo: Ian MacNicol
