Kenny Jackett’s aiming to bolster his engine room as he finally aims to lead the Blues to League One promotion.
It could also be argued that the Blues also need a replacement for Tom Naylor should the skipper sustain an injury, as there’s no-one in the squad who can replicate his combative style in the middle of the park.
Jackett and his recruitment team will be identifying potential targets who could be prised to Fratton Park, with the funds available for one heavy-hitter in the area.
Pompey are likely to recruit a fringe midfielder from the Championship or a talented youngster in a Premier League side’s under-23s set-up.
We take a look at some players the Blues may be targeting...

9. Ryan Tunnicliffe - Luton Town
The former Man Utd man has a wealth of Championship games under his belt and helped Luton to the League One title two seasons ago. Tunnicliffe's played only 10 times this season, though, and is out of contract in the summer so may want to get back playing regularly. Photo: Catherine Ivill

10. Nick Freeman - Wycombe
The 25-year-old scored two goals in 34 appearances when Wycombe were promoted last season. Freeman's only played 10 times this term, though, making only two Championship starts. He needs game time, although Wanderers may be reluctant to let him leave given their relegation battle. Photo: Nigel Keene

11. Kevin Stewart - free agent
Another midfielder who left Hull in the summer and is still a free agent. Stewart was reluctant to drop to League One but he may be forced to do so if unable to find a Championship club that suits. Photo: David Rogers
