The News revealed on Friday that the current England Under-20 head coach was interested in a Fratton Park reunion – nearly six years after he left the south coast for the FA’s St George’s Park.
Now the 46-year-old has been heavily tipped to make that return journey, with Pompey expected to unveil their successor to Danny Cowley in the next 24 hours.
But why is Paul Cook’s former assistant now seen by many as the man to lead the Blues into a brand new era under director of football Richard Hughes?
Well, you just have to look at his achievements ever since saying goodbye to the club in February 2017 – just months before Pompey lifted the League Two title on the final day of the 2016-17 season.

As well as all his success with the FA, it shouldn't be forgotten that Foster helped guide the Blues, under Paul Cook, to the 2015-16 League Two play-offs and was instrumental in their 2016-17 title win - despite leaving three months before the final day of the season. Photo: Joe Pepler
