Spirited Portsmouth earn first Championship victory after 2-1 win against QPR

Pompey’s wait for a first league win of the season is over.

The returning Callum Lang sealed the Blues maiden three points following their 12-year return to the Championship.

John Mousinho’s side had to come from behind to put their longest start to a campaign without a win since the war to bed.

Kader Dembele opened the scoring after capitalising on a Nicolas Schmid error nine minutes into the contest before Freddie Potts responded soon after.

Lang hit the Blues’ winner on the 58th minute after calmly converting from spot in what was a breathless end-to-end encounter at Loftus Road.

Mousinho’s men found themselves behind less than 10 minutes into the contest and it’s a goal the Blues won’t want to see again. A mix up between Regan Poole, Tom McIntyre and Schmid saw the latter come out of his box but miss-timed his header. The ball fell kindly to Dembele, who chipped over the Pompey keeper to open the scoring.

But the visitors responded and it took just nine minutes to find an equaliser. The returning Lang stole the ball from Morgan Fox on the right-wing before making a darting run to the by-line. The 26-year-old’s cross deflected off Nicolas Madsen into the path of Potts, who slotted home his first Blues goal.

The first-half contest was a breathless end-to-end affair and Schmid was called into action just on the half-hour mark as he stopped Ilias Chair’s chip to regain the host’s lead.

The Blues did have a chance of their own as Christian Saydee, who was restricted for large parts of the contest, wiggled room before unleashing a powerful strike 25-yards-out but was stopped by Paul Nardi in goal.

Out of nowhere 12 minutes into the second half, Lang made a great run and was clipped by Fox in the box and referee James Linington pointed straight to the spot. The 26-year-old stepped up and calmly converted his spot kick in front of the sold out away end.

Pompey were fair from danger as QPR looked to respond. The closest the host’s came to an equaliser, however, saw Koki Saito’s header brilliantly stopped by Schmid in goal.

The win for Mousinho’s men keeps them 23rd in the table but are level on points with 21st-placed Coventry.
