Ronan Curtis' Portsmouth future spelt out by trusted source well in the know - with advice on where to play Irishman added, too

We all know a mother knows best – so the same rule must surely apply when Ronan Curtis’ mum, Marie, speaks.

And what’s she saying, I hear you ask?

Well, to put it simply, that the Irishman is staying at Fratton Park and that his best position is on the left wing.

Curtis’ future has been the subject of much speculation again this summer as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

Meanwhile, Danny Cowley has insisted on occasions this summer that he’s ‘open-minded’ when it comes to the 26-year-old’s continued Pompey presence.

Indeed, keen to protect their assets, there’s a real possibility the Republic of Ireland international could walk away for nothing upon the expiry of his current deal next summer.

Despite the chatter, Curtis continues to do his bit for the Pompey cause, recording a goal and an assist in the Blues’ 3-0 Carabao Cup win at Cardiff on Tuesday night.

The former Derry man headed straight to the travelling Fratton faithful in the Welsh capital to celebrate his excellent conversion from the penalty spot, cupping his hears in the process.

That led to more speculation about it’s meaning – as did gestures made to fans at the final whistle.

But keen to clear up any misunderstandings, popular mum Marie – who has quite a following on social media – took to Twitter to explain. And in doing so informed her followers that her son as staying put on the south coast.

She tweeted: ‘People taken wrong message he sent out to the fans last night when he means he’s staying some fans took it the wrong way thinking he’s saying Pompey going down but great to see whole team fight get the result.’

Mrs Curtis also had some words of advice for Danny Cowley, after watching her son play various different roles for the team.

The seven-times-capped Eire international has played right across the forward line in recent games – including pre-season – for the Blues, starting on the right-wing for the season-opener against Sheffield Wednesday, following the sale of Marcus Harness to Ipswich.

But knowing too well that Curtis is at his most effective on the left, Marie added: ‘He was all over the place but put him on wing he’ll do his best.’

Since joining Pompey from the League of Ireland in 2018, Curtis has scored 51 goals and recorded 26 assists in 193 appearances.

He’ll hope to be back in the starting XI for Cheltenham after starting Saturday’s League One draw against Lincoln on the bench.
