It goes without saying that a selection headache when you have all your options available is so much better than a head-scratcher when injuries and suspension have taken hold.
Those days are rare, as current Pompey head coach John Mousinho will testify. But what would he do if everyone reported fit and available for selection?
With a squad that currently tops League One bursting with options, there’d be plenty not even considered for the bench.
So what would that starting XI and bench look like? Obviously, a lot depends on the opposition and individual tactics needed for said opponents.
But here’s our guess that how the Blues would look if Mousinho’s squad was afforded a clean bill of health.

9. Right wing: Paddy Lane
The Northern Ireland international has really come to the fore in recent weeks, starting each of Pompey's past six league games. That has seen him score three goals in that time as the Blues maintain their presence at the summit of League One. Even if fellow countryman Gavin Whyte were to up his game, Lane still has enough stock in reserve to retain his place in the team. Like every player, there's still room for improvement - but the energetic former Fleetwood man is clearly heading in the right direction. Photo: Jason Brown

10. No 10: Alex Robertson
Another tough on to call, but one the on-loan Manchester City youngster just edges. Team-mate Christian Saydee is proving a huge hit with the Fratton faithful - and, no doubt, his omission here will upset a few. However, Robertson is also appreciated and has been demonstrating plenty of his undoubted potential since his move in the summer. An ability to play both deep and attacking midfield roles has its advantages. The only concern is Robertson's tendency to pick up bookings, with seven accrued already this season. Photo: Jason Brown

11. Left wing: Abu Kamara
Fair play to the on-loan Norwich youngster as he continues to grab his Pompey opportunity with both hands. Has featured in every single game for the Blues this season - just one of two players to do so - and his really growing into his role on the left flank. The 20-year-old possesses loads of quality, as demonstrated with his assist against Wycombe and his goal against Gillingham in the EFL Trophy. Many assumed he would play second fiddle behind both Anthony Scully (currently out injuted) and Gavin Whyte this season. However, that's not been the case. While they've faltered, he's shone! 12. Centre forward: Colby Bishop
Let's put it this way - since arriving from Accrington in the summer of 2022, Bishop has featured 58 times in the league for the Blues. Those outings have produced 28 goals, making him the undoubted focal point of any Pompey attack. Is there a better striker in League One? I doubt it. Photo: Jason Brown
