Its League One fixture release day on Thursday morning but how do Pompey tend to fare on the opening weekend?
Jamal Lowe scored the only goal of the game and it soon got Pompey fans thinking about the prospect of promotion. But, little did they know it would be their opponents who would go on to be crowned League One champions.
A win to kickstart the Michael Eisner era in what was a feisty affair. Following the early dismissal of Keith Keane, debutant Pitman stepped up before netting his second soon after Lowes 81st-minute red card.
In a campaign where Pompey went on to achieve promotion from League Two, Carlisle frustrated Cook and co side on the opening day, despite the visitors playing with 10 men for over an hour - forcing debutant Carl Baker to rescue a point.
A fine debut from summer signing Kyle Bennett got Pompey off to a flying start as he added to a Gareth Evans opener with a second-half brace - including a stunning strike from 25 yards.
Trailing from a Craig Woodman first-half goal, Pompey peppered the Exeter goalmouth in the second period with Ryan Bird brilliantly denied twice before Jed Wallace levelled with just over 15 minutes remaining.
In front of a record attendance for League Two, a Patrick Agyemang opener proved nothing more than a brief piece of excitement with Oxford hitting the 10-man hosts for four after Johnny Ertl saw red.
Administration-hit Pompey fielded a team of debutants after a turbulent summer. It was remarkable the hosts got anything out the game but did with Izale McLeod on the scoresheet.
