‘No brainer. Massively improved his game’: No-nonsense Portsmouth verdict over Zak Swanson's Fratton future

Zak Swanson has amassed 104 appearances for Pompey following his arrival from Arsenal in 2022.

Pompey fans on social media have made it clear the Blues must tie Zak Swanson down to a new deal.

The versatile defender has impressed in the Championship for John Mousinho’s men this term, amassing 28 outings in all competitions to date.

The 25-year-old has revelled in a new left-back role in Connor Ogilvie’s absence and has also appeared at right-back, centre-back and at the heart of midfield at various points of the campaign so far.

Although injuries and availability initially hampered the full-back’s stay at Fratton Park, that hasn’t been the case over the past two seasons as he establishes himself as a Championship performer.

And supporters on social media are keen for the ex-Arsenal man to commit his long-term future to PO4 as his stock continues to grow.

Here’s the best of the reaction from the Fratton faithful on both X and Facebook.

Pompey verdict on Zak Swanson future

X

@WILLYHAHN71: Been relatively injury free which was the issue in the past, 2 years with an option.

@RuskieRoo56: Personally I'd look to extend Swanson & Ogs. I think the others could all be let go. Dozzell has done okay for us but I think we can find better to kick on. Pack obviously has the sentimental value but I think after this year I could see him in the coaching setup.

@chambers552325: Swanny has always been one of my favourite players - big game performances vs Spurs and Peterborough, and now very consistent. Not too sure why Mous keeps substituting him for Williams every game. He didn't look too pleased when hooked again at Charlton.

@wate8181: No brainer, the same as everyone has been saying, Ogilvie, Swanson & Steward new contracts. Retain Doz on a 1 yr + option. Pack, 12-months pay as you play. Archer & Swann released. Even if we’re looking to bring in new faces, we have to retain and build. Not sell & gamble!

@tomnm2001: Swanson, Ogilvie and Steward must keeps, would accept another year for Dozzell and Pack but mostly benchwarmers and would like to see pack transition into a coach here if he fancies it.

@Thomas_2791: I’d like to think Swanson stays, but if he doesn’t I think he’d be the first person to leave us on a free and then go on to better things since Enda Stevens.

Gary Cox: Zak is an example to all the moaners about us recruiting young, unproven and injury prone players. Swanny has been all these at Pompey but good coaching, careful management, trust and persistence means a few years later he is a key player with good value and profit potential. Get him on another 2-3 years now and cash in if required in the future.

Chris Bentham: Definitely he’s improving each season worth a place in team at left or right back and can fill in at centre half. Sign him up now.

Dan McClumpha: Swanny has massively improved his game, kept himself fit and become a mainstay in the Starting 11 and been superb at LB,Super Zak! Get the boy tied down!

Laurie Griffiths: Definitely a valuable asset to the club.

Phil Turvey: Swanaldinho has been superb this season, played four or five different positions and been steady in all. He deserves a new deal if he wants one. I suspect if it’s another one plus one again then he might look elsewhere.

Doug McEwen: An absolute no brainer. Zak has been excellent - wherever he has played. And sign Ogs as well. Both Player of the Year contenders with Devlin. At least we have a one year option on Steward who will surely be our first choice keeper next season.
