‘A coup’: Watford close in sensational move for ex-Roma ace ahead of Portsmouth contest
Pompey make the trip to Watford in the Championship this evening.
Championship football is coming thick and fast for Pompey, who make the trip to Watford this evening.
The Blues visit Vicarage Road off the back of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday, with the triumph continuing their brilliant turn of form in recent weeks.
John Mousinho’s men have been busy in the market, with Keshi Anderson the latest to make the move to Fratton Park - sealing a permanent switch on Tuesday evening.
Watford are also looking to delve into the market and are reportedly closing in on a new signing before this evening’s fixture.
Ex-Roma ace undergoing Watford medical
Javi Gracia’s side are poised to announce the arrival of former Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove, according to the Watford Observer.
The 23-year-old underwent a medical on Monday at the Hornets’ training ground before agreeing a deal for the remainder of the campaign.
It remains to be seen if the Italian youth international will have signed before the registration deadline in order to feature against Pompey tonight.
Bove rose through the ranks with Roma where he amassed 82 appearances in all competitions before spending time on loan with Serie A rivals Fiorentina.
However, in December 2024, the midfielder collapsed mid-game during La Viola’s contest against Inter Milan and was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery to fit a subcutaneous implantable defibrillator.
Italian rules, though, have banned the device, meaning Roma were forced to cut ties with Bove at the beginning of the January window.
With the young talent reportedly closing in on a switch to Watford, European football journalist Kevin Hatchard praised the Hornets for pulling off a ‘coup’ to land the Italian sensation.
Watford close in on ‘coup’ ahead of Pompey contest
Speaking on Sky Sports News, he said: ‘I think it's a bit of a coup, this. He's somebody who's got great energy in midfield and can do a bit of everything. He can break up play, he can drive forward.
‘He broke through as a Roma youth product, he's from Rome and he had great pride playing for Roma.
‘Obviously there was a lot of competition for places and he couldn't quite get a regular first-team spot, so he went to Fiorentina and then sadly in a game at the back end of 2024 he collapsed.
‘He's had that defibrillator put in and it's a similar situation to Christian Eriksen who could no longer play in Italy when he had that fitted.
‘If he could play in Italy I think there would be a lot of clubs who would be interested in bringing him in.
‘I'm fascinated to see how he does and I don't see any reason why once he's up to full speed and match fitness, he can't make a real impact there.’
Watford welcome Pompey to Vicarage Road this evening sitting on the cusps of the play-offs, while Mousinho’s men dropped into the bottom three after Tuesday evening’s results.
