Exclusive:Portsmouth transfer news: Championship and top end League One clubs monitoring defender's situation at Fratton Park

Jordan Williams is attracting interest this summer as he approaches the final year of his Fratton Park contract

Jordan Williams has clubs patiently monitoring his situation at Pompey.

The News has learnt teams in both the Championship and top end of League One are currently keeping a careful watch on the defender’s availability, with a Fratton Park exit a possibility this summer.

It’s understood that conversations are ongoing about where the 26-year-old fits into the Blues’ strategy ahead of the 2026-27 season.

And while the former Barnsley captain is not pushing to leave Pompey with one year remaining on his current deal, a desire for more regular game time could determine the outcome of those discussions.

Williams ended the 2025-26 campaign on a high by starting the Blues’ last six games and playing a key role in their survival against relegation.

However, prior to Connor Ogilvie’s first-half sending off against Oxford United and Williams’ subsequent introduction as a 30th-minute substitute, the defender remained an unused sub for eight straight games.

Meanwhile, his last start before being handed a starting XI role in the win against Middlesbrough on April 4 came against Derby County back on December 12.

In total, Williams began 16 Championship for Pompey last season, with his 14 other appearances coming off the bench.

His game time was restricted following the emergence of Terry Devlin at right-back and Zak Swanson’s best ever season at Fratton Park.

End-of-term injuries to both full-backs also presented Williams with an opportunity to remind the Fratton faithful what he is capable of.

But if both remain at Pompey beyond the summer, Williams risks spending further game time on the bench and seeing his career stall.

That’s something Williams wants to avoid, approaching his 27th birthday in October.

It’s also why a host of clubs are on standby if the right-back and the Blues cannot align on a way forward.

No decision on that is close, with nothing expected to be determined until after Williams & Co report back for pre-season training at the end of this month.

Anticipated interest in Devlin and whether any clubs meet Pompey’s asking price for the Northern Ireland international could also have a bearing on Williams’ futue.
