Portsmouth not heading to MKM Stadium next season as Hull City clinch pomotion to Premier League with play-off win v Middlesbrough
Hull City have booked their place in the Premier League after their Championship play-off final victory against Middlesbrough
Pompey will be excused a trip to the MKM Stadium next season after Hull City won the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
Oli McBurnie’s 94th-minute strike clinched victory for Sergej Jakirović’s side against Middlesbrough as they secured their place in the Premier League behind champions Coventry City and Ipswich Town.
It will be the first time Hull will be in the Premier League since their relegation in 2017. Last season they finished 21st in the Championship following their final day draw against Pompey at Fratton Park.
The Tigers side booked their passage to the top flight as the build up to the Championship showpiece was overshadowed by Southampton being expelled from the final after being caught spying on Boro ahead of their semi-final first-leg game at the Riverside.
Owner Acun Ilicali vowed to take legal action if they didn’t win at Wembley.
Pompey failed to beat Hull on the two occasions they came up against them this season. November’s trip to the MKM Stadium finished in a 3-2 defeat. John Mousinho’s troops then lost 1-0 at Fratton Park in February following a late mistake by Adrian Segecic.
The Blues took maximum points off Middlesbrough thanks to two 1-0 wins.
Boro will remain in the Championship alongside Pompey, where they’ll be joined by already-relegated Premier League sides Wolves and Burnley. Either West Ham or Spurs will follow when the Premier League season is completed on Sunday.
Coming up from League One are champions Lincoln City and Cardiff.
Bolton and Stockport County, who the Blues last played in 2001, will compete in the League One play-off final on Sunday (1pm).
