Portsmouth miss out on midfielder transfer as Bristol City confirm signing on four-year deal
Bristol City have ended any lingering hopes of a Pompey move for Gibson Yah
Gibson Yah can now be officially considered a former Pompey target.
That’s because the midfielder has ended weeks of talk about his future by signing for the Blues’ Championship rivals, Bristol City.
The 22-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the Robins that will keep him at Ashton Gate until the summer of 2030.
Confirmation of his switch for an undisclosed fee comes just days after the Fratton faithful learned that a potential move to the south coast from Dutch side FC Volendam had fallen through.
It’s understood the Blues could not strike a deal on certain conditions, after being in advanced talks with the player and his representatives.
Revealing why he ended up at Bristol City - a club that were credited with an interest in Pompey head coach John Mousinho earlier in the close season - Yah said talks with new sporting director James Ellis and the recently appointed boss Michael Skubala convinced him to make the switch to City.
He said: ‘James Ellis and Michael Skubala showed me their vision. They told me the plans they have for me and especially the trust they were speaking about.
‘I’m here to show them what I can do. I don’t like to speak words, so I prefer to show it on the pitch and I will do my best for the club and for the team to make sure I succeed.
‘It’s going to be a new environment for me, but I think I’m in good hands here. I can’t wait to get started, get on the pitch with the boys and show what I can do.’
Yah represents the Robins’ third signing in the space of 48 hours, after deals or Sam Tickle and Sam Greenwood were completed.
Skubala said former Ajax youngster Yah was an exciting players to add to his ranks.
‘We’re really pleased to bring Gibson to Bristol City,’ he said.
‘He’s an exciting young player with a lot physical and technical attributes that we look for and we are excited to work with him.’
Since news that a deal for Yah had fallen through, Pompey have been linked with moves for miidfielders Mate Tuboly, Archie Collins and Rocco Shein.
Following the release of the 2026-27 fixtures, Yah and Bristol City won’t have long to wait before going head-to-head with Pompey. The Blues travel to Ashton Gate on August 29.
The return fixture takes place at Fratton Park on April 17.
