Portsmouth give explanation for poppies not being worn on shirts in Ipswich Town win

Pompey have given their reasons for not wearing poppies on their shirts at Ipswich.

The Blues highlighted their last home meeting with Charlton was the club’s designated Remembrance Day fixture.

But chief executive, Mark Catlin, has apologised if the Blues not wearing remembrance poppies at Portman Road caused any upset.

Catlin explained how the shirts from the Charlton game have been sold to raise funds for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

But steps are being taken to see if further poppies can be added to the kit Pompey will wear against West Ham under-21s, in tomorrow’s Papa John’s Trophy match at Fratton Park.

Catlin said: ‘Our last home game was the designated Remembrance Day fixture.

‘Shirts at that point were then sold for the benefit of the Royal British Legion.

‘We would like to apologise, however, and we’ll be looking into the reasons it didn’t happen on Saturday.

‘We will also speak to the kit department about wearing poppies in Tuesday’s game in the Papa John’s Trophy.

‘However, we’ve been advised that trying to find an embroiderer in lockdown may not be easy - but that’s what we are trying to do.’
