Transfer state of play over Portsmouth reunion for ex-Brighton and Ipswich defender Adam Webster

The Blues’ youth-team product left Fratton Park in June 2016 after 81 games and five goals

It's looking increasingly unlikely there will be an emotional homecoming for Adam Webster.

Once a £20m signing, Webster suffered an ACL injury to his knee during the Premier League club’s pre-season in Marbella in July 2025.

The issue ruled him out of the entire 2025-26 campaign, culminating in his Amex Stadium exit being announced last month at the end of his contract following 158 appearances and six goals.

Now aged 31, Webster still lives in the Chichester area and a potential Fratton Park reunion has been championed by some of the Fratton faithful.

However, The News understands the Blues’ former Academy graduate is currently not on their wish-list and, as a consequence, hasn’t been approached about a potential return.

Too many centre-halves at Fratton Park

Certainly Pompey are over-stocked for centre-halves at present, with six contracted for the 2026-27 campaign at least.

If anything, numbers in that position require reducing this summer, with Conor Shaughnessy, Regan Poole, Madiodio Dia, Hayden Matthews, Ibane Bowat and Josh Knight on the Fratton Park books.

Undoubtedly, though, Webster would represent a quality addition, having captained Brighton in the Premier League and, during periods in his career, come close to earning England recognition.

He would go on to make 81 appearances, scoring five times, before being sold by Paul Cook in the summer of 2016 to Ipswich in a £700,000 deal which also saw Matt Clarke arriving permanently as a makeweight.

Webster went on to move to Bristol City, earning Pompey a sell-on windfall, before joining Brighton in August 2019 for £20m, thereby becoming a Premier League player.

‘Really excited for my next adventure wherever that may be’

‘I’ve been so lucky to have worked with so many amazing people at the club who have become friends for life. All the staff that don’t get any credit behind the scenes I will miss you. My team mates, it has been a pleasure and an honour. Both on and off the pitch we have had some incredible experiences and moments that I won’t ever forget!

‘Thank you to the Albion fans for all the support along the way through the good and bad. Hope to see you back at the Amex soon.

‘Gutted it has come to end this way, didn’t think for a second that Spurs away last game of the season would be the last time I played for the club but that’s life and that’s football.

‘Thank you to my wife and kids for being my constant rock in all of this, I couldn’t have done this without you especially this last year.

‘Really excited for my next adventure wherever that may be.’

Former Chichester High School pupil

Born in Chichester and raised in West Wittering, the former Chichester High School pupil was rejected by Pompey, Southampton and Chelsea as a youngster.

However, following a second Pompey trial, he was taken into their School of Excellence as an 11-year-old - and so began a career which took him to the Premier League.

In January 2012, Webster made his Blues first-team debut under Michael Appleton after coming off the bench with 15 minutes remaining to replace Greg Halford at right-back against West Ham at Fratton Park.
