Portsmouth rivals 'set to sack' manager after just 9 Championship games in charge

Sky Sports are reporting that Watford have decided to sack manager Paulo Pezzolano

Pompey rivals Watford are poised to sack manager Paulo Pezzolano.

That’s according to Sky Sports, who claim the Hornets have decided to part company with the Uruguayan after just nine Championship games in charge.

The controversial decision comes after ‘crunch talks’ were held between the former Real Valladolid manager and the Vicarage Road hierarchy on Tuesday.

Watford currently sit 12th in the table with 12 points from their nine games played to date. That’s the same number of points as the 14th-placed Blues, whom the Hornets secured a 2-2 draw against last week at Fratton Park.

Minyeok Yang opened the scoring for John Mousinho’s side in the fifth minute of Wednesday night’s fixture, only for the visitors to take the lead in the second half following two quickfire goals from Imran Louza (46mins) and Rocco Vata (56).

Substitute Adrian Segecic restored parity for Pompey in the 79th minute to help the home side avoid a third successive defeat.

Pompey followed up that draw with a 1-0 win over previous league leaders Middlesbrough on Saturday. Watford did the same with a come-from-behind win against Oxford United at Vicarage Road as they recorded for third league win of the season.

Yet despite that victory and Watford sitting just three points off the play-offs, Pezzolano’s time with the Hornets looks over - just five months after replacing Tom Cleverley.

Pezzolano will be the second Championship manager to lose his job this season, following Sheffield United’s decision to part ways with Ruben Selles on September 14.

According to Sky Sports, former boss Javi Garcia is the club’s No1 target to be his successor.
