Former Portsmouth transfer target and midfielder available as talks break down

A former Pompey midfielder and Fratton target are looking for new clubs this summer, after contract talks broke down - with the news confirmed today.

Former Pompey midfielder Cameron McGeehan is looking for a new club this summer.

And the former Blues man has been joined by a touted Fratton target from years gone by, in being available as a free agent.

That’s after the ex-Luton and Barnsley man’s Northampton’s team-mate Nesta Guinness-Walker also failed to agree a new deal with the Cobblers, after their relegation from League One.

It means two of Chris Hogg’s key squad members will depart Sixfields, after Liam Manning’s No2 was appointed last month.

Both will likely be in demand after spending two years with the club, as McGeehan followed up his Pompey stay in 2020 with a three-year stint in Belgium with Oostende and season with Danny Cowley’s Colchester before arriving at his most recent home.

New Northampton boss Chris Hogg explained talks with both men over new agreements failed to move forward, leading to a parting of ways.

He told the club’s official website: ‘Both Nesta and Cam have been excellent servants to this club over the last two years and we part on good terms with both.

‘We wish both of them well and every success with their future careers.

‘We spoke with both players, but as discussions weren't aligned, we have taken the decision to move on.

‘I want players who are fully committed to the club moving forward, and that will be our consistent approach with everyone we speak to.’

Guinness-Walker was linked with Pompey ahead of the January transfer window at the end of the end of 2021, with the left-back then potentially available at a knockdown price as he entered the final six months of his contract with AFC Wimbledon.

A move was never seen to fruition, however, with Guinness-Walker instead joining Reading where he spent two years, before linking up with Northampton.

McGeehan’s time at Fratton Park spanned 17 appearances in the curtailed 2019-20 season, with the 31-year-old ending the season in tears as he missed the only penalty of the League One play-off shootout defeat against Oxford United.

He also endured a difficult moment at PO4 before his arrival, breaking his leg in January 2017 after a challenge with Michael Doyle.

McGeehan was booked for dissent in the incident leading to boos from the home crowd when he left the pitch, before the severity of his injury became apparent.
