£3.4m-rated right-winger Portsmouth wanted in summer now available for transfer at 'bargain price'

Pompey were keen on USA Olympian Griffin Yow during the summer transfer window

He was a £3.4m-rated forward Pompey had an interest in during the summer transfer window.

Now, on the eve of the January window, reports are emerging that the right-winger in question is available to clubs for a ‘bargain price’.

With 15 goals and 18 assists from 61 appearances for KVC Westerlo in the Belgian Jupiler League, Yow was under consideration - albeit at a price Pompey were unlikely to succumb to.

Indeed, USMNT expert Tom Bogert claimed the ‘$$ was not close for fee or personal terms’ to be agreed, with Pompey subsequently turning to Florian Bianchini, Minyeok Yang, Franco Umeh and Conor Chaplin to increase competition for the right-wing berth.

Unfortunately, with the Blues at the halfway stage of their 2025-26 season, a regular right-attacking forward has yet been found, with Bianchini, Chaplin, Yang, Adrian Segecic, Harvey Blair, Mark Kosznovszky, Callum Lang, Josh Murphy and Terry Devlin all deployed there.

But, again, it looks like a Yow move to Fratton Park is unlikely - even though he could be available for as little as €500,000 next month.

Pompey target Griffin Yow on the move

According to reports, the 23-year-old - who is out of contract at the end of the season - is determined to leave the Het Kuipje outfit in January as he looks to bolster his chances of appearing in next summer’s World Cup for co-hosts USA.

And with Westerlo keen to get some return on a player they plucked from MLS side DC United in 2022, they’re willing to sanction that request.

Among the clubs reportedly keen are KAA Gent, who sit two places above Westerlo in the Belgian Pro League table.

They’ve supposedly already held talks with Yow’s representatives. Although there’s also strong interest from Cyprus top-flight leaders Pafos FC.

This season, Yow has contributed three goals in 17 league appearances as Westerlo sit 10th in the table.

John Mousinho and Pompey’s need for a right-winger

Last week Mousinho re-iterated his desire for between 3-6 signings next month - yet he remained uncertain whether that would include another right winger.

He told The News: ‘It’s an area we have looked at, but, whether we do anything in the window or not, I don’t know.

‘But we do have options there. Segs, Chappers, Minhyeok, Flo and Murph have played there as well, so quite a few (options).

‘I think if you look at Langy’s natural strengths and his natural talent, he is suited to playing anywhere across the front line, hence we have played him most often as a 10, a nine a couple of times this season, and then off the right more recently.

‘Whether he now plays there depends, we are probably still looking for the solution there. In the meantime, you have Langy’s level of performances and two goals in three games arriving at that back post, which he does really, really well. The more he can do that the better.

‘What Langy has given us is what we know he is going to give us, energy, drive, a huge amount on the press and did that when he played up front as well.

‘We’ve slotted him into the 10 at times and, ultimately, Langy pops with goals, which is really valuable for us.’
