And clues over how things stand on that front may well become apparent, with the 22-year-old due to be in action for his current employers FK Fredrikstad.

They take on Swedish side IF Elfsborg in a friendly with the Norwegian Eliteserien currently paused for a mid-season break.

FFK had their first warm-up last week against HamKam with Shein not involved in the 1-1 draw, though plenty of the club’s senior players weree also absent.

Shein’s level of involvement in his club’s next outing could provide an indication to how far advanced a move to Fratton Park is, however.

Players will often not be risked in such settings if a move is progressing, with any injuries suffered potentially put the deal in jeopardy.

There is also the likelihood of an update from FFK’s new head coach, Casper Røjkjær, who will address the Norwegian press after the game.

Shein, who is also being chased by Championship rivals Cardiff City and Millwall, is a transfer priority for Pompey this summer.

The Blues are looking to reshape their midfield, with Andre Dozzell moving on to MLS side DC United.

Shein is valued between £2.5m and £4.2m by his current employers, after arriving from Dutch side Utrecht 18 months ago. His existing deal with FFK runs until January 2029.

Pompey lost out on a deal for Dutchman Gibson Yah, who moved to Championship rivals Bristol City after leaving Volendam.

Highly-touted Peterborough United free agent Archie Collins is of interest with Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford United also keen on the 26-year-old.

Shein has spoken about Pompey’s interest this week, as he diplomatically acknowledged a move to England appeals to him.

When asked about the Blues being keen on him, Shein told the Fredrikstad Blad: ‘I have only heard of interest from England.

‘It would have been an exciting step for sure. But now I'm an FFK player.

‘I've noticed that there has been a lot of interest, but to be honest, I choose to turn off my phone when it's on. I want to have full focus on what I'm going to do here in Fredrikstad.

‘As I said, I have noticed that there have been some writings and rumors. But I can't focus on that. It would be disrespectful to FFK, which is my club.'
