‘Players of a good calibre’: Portsmouth skipper's transfer verdict as he welcomes Milovanović and Shein arrivals

Marlon Pack has spoken of his excitement at the landmark arrivals of Marko Milovanović and Rocco Shein, with the Pompey skipper now sharing his thoughts on his club going to the continent for new deals.

Marlon Pack rolled out the welcome mat for Pompey’s impending captures as he endorsed his club shopping on the continent.

The skipper believes the Blues are ready to announce European signings of a ‘good calibre’ with deals for Marko Milovanović and Rocco Shein set to be confirmed.

The wait is continuing for the official announcement for both players, as details over visas and work permits are put in place.

Both players represent landmark deals for Pompey, topping any other business carried out by the club since they were in the Premier League in terms of fees.

Pompey are looking to the European market, as they significantly up their spending on transfer fees in the weeks and months ahead.

Pack can certainly see the logic in doing that, as his team looks to get the most bang for their buck across some significant squad reshaping.

The midfielder pointed to some of the inflated fees being paid for top Championship talent as reason for doing so, as Ethan Galbraith joins Stoke City in a £10m-plus deal 12 months on from moving to Swansea City for £1.5m.

Meanwhile, Andre Brooks has moved to Norwich City from Sheffield United for an initial £8m, with the deal rising to over £10m with add-ons.

Pack said: ‘I suppose it’s value for money, right?

‘If you want to go and sign Championship experience, and when I say experience I mean a Championship player at the peak of their career, it’s going to cost you double what you’d pay if you maybe look abroad for the same type of player.

‘We’ve seen that and we’re seeing that now.

‘Look at Ethan Galbraith, he’s a top footballer, excellent footballer, but there’s a premium for these players.

‘It’s the same with the elite players in the Premium League by comparison and some of the moves taking place - there’s a premium to pay for that.

‘If you can still get a high calibre of player with a little bit of value, that makes sense and I suppose that’s where we’re competing at the minute.

‘There’s a lot of intrigue and there looks to be players coming across with a good calibre to them.’

Pack is like any Pompey fan in watching the deals being lined up for new players with some excitement, even when Shein will be competing in the same area of the pitch as the Buckland lad.

But the midfielder explained he’s also looking at Pompey’s business now from a slightly different perspective, as edges towards the close of his playing days.

He said: ‘I’m still the other side of it, but I want to start having an idea of what things look like on that side - especially on recruitment moving forward.

‘I’m not quite there yet, but I want an understanding of it.’
