Portsmouth boss’ Conor Chaplin expectation with Ipswich Town future to be formalised
Ipswich Town can cut short Conor Chaplin’s Pompey stay this week, but John Mousinho is looking ahead with the attacker in his Fratton plans.
John Mousinho remains convinced Conor Chaplin is showing signs of making his expected Pompey impact with his future set to be confirmed.
The Blues boss is certain the anticipated goals and assists will flow for the Fratton favourite in his preferred attacking position, after a run of starts across his side’s best moments over the Christmas period.
Cut-off for Chaplin loan recall from Ipswich Town this week
Pompey are waiting for clarity over Chaplin’s future this month, after arriving on loan from Ipswich Town on the final day of the summer transfer window.
Mousinho told The News last week, the academy graduate’s parent club have signalled their intent to let the 28-year-old remain at PO4 for the campaign in discussions.
Tractor Boys boss Kieran McKenna stated there’s been no formal talks over the issue, however, with the position over Chaplin still to be decided after failing to hit the back of the net this term.
The player, for his part, remains in limbo with the cut-off point for his recall running until the end of this week, according to McKenna.
Pompey boss: ‘I think the season is ahead of Conor’
Ipswich did allow the attacking talent to feature in the FA Cup against Arsenal on Sunday, ruling him out of any Cup involvement if he did return to Portman Road.
That perhaps points toward Chaplin’s parent club being comfortable with their player staying at Fratton Park, but it looks as if absolute clarity will not be found until the cut-off for his recall passes.
Mousinho is planning for the former Coventry City and Barnsley man to be his player for the duration of the campaign, however, as he arrives at the conclusion of his existing Ipswich contract this summer.
Chaplin has started five of the past six Pompey games, with those outings coinciding with his side’s best form of the season as they went four games unbeaten over the Christmas period.
After being deployed on the right amid fitness issues, the Premier League operator has played in the deep-lying where he excelled at Ipswich across back-to-back promotions.
Now Mousinho thinks the loanee can step up with the goals and assists expected, across a Pompey bid for Championship survival.
When asked about Chaplin’s position on the right affecting his form, the Pompey boss said: ‘Maybe that affected him a little bit, but we’ve now had enough games with Chappers in his preferred position for him to really get going and fit in the team well.
‘He’s definitely affecting games, we just haven’t had the output in terms of goals and assists that Conor would like, let alone what we would expect.
‘He’s definitely had a massive effect on us, though.
‘Prior to that Bristol City game we had a good run of results and a good run of games, albeit that small run of games and four games undefeated with two wins. Taking eight points from four games at that time of season for us was important, because teams at bottom started picking up results and teams in the middle didn’t.
‘We needed that and the fact we’re two games short of a lot of sides, so the contribution everyone is making in terms of morale, but particularly Conor, is great.
‘I think the season is ahead of Conor, that’s very much what we’re focussing on.’
