Portsmouth’s Championship rivals vie with Celtic for exciting breakout talent with ‘unfinished business’ for key appointment

The latest news from across the Championship, with transfer talk and a key rival appointment speaking after his unveiling.

Lions' French fancy

Millwall are keen on emerging French striker Tairyk Arconte, according to reports.

But Pompey’s Championship rivals are said to be facing competition from Scottish giants Celtic for the 22-year-old, according to Foot Mercarto.

Arconte impressed in the French second tier with Rodez last season, bagging 14 goals in 32 outings to see his stock rise.

Auxerre are another side said to be keen on the talent, who has switched allegiances to Guadeloupe after representing France at under-19 level.

Mowbray’s back

Tony Mowbray has targeted Premier League football amid ‘unfinished business’ at Blackburn Rovers.

The former Ewood Park boss’ return to his former club was confirmed last night, as another Championship managerial vacancy was filled.

After dealing with a cancer scare, Mowbray is delighted to return to the club he served for fie years until 2022.

‘It feels quite amazing,’ he told RoversTV: ‘I’ve been back a few times in the past season to watch a few games and it feels like home, especially considering I spent a long time here - five-and-a-half years.

‘That’s a long, long time in modern-day football, and we had some good times and felt like we’d built a half-decent team but couldn’t quite get over the line to reach our ambition of getting in the Premier League.

‘It almost feels like I’m coming back to finish the job, because the aim of every team in the Championship is to try and get to the Premier League.

‘I think you need the energy to do the job and my wife is so happy that this opportunity has come because I’ve been driving everybody mad in the house!

‘I’m full of energy, but the highlight of my day has been going out and walking the dog!

‘Football burns away in me, can’t wait to get started and I’m looking forward to making new relationships and reinventing the old ones.

‘I’m looking forward to meeting the players and I’m hoping they’re all full of energy and desperate to do well.

‘I’m looking forward to it, I know the responsibility of being the head coach at a club like this and I am here to make people proud.’

Swans and Hornets looking to Mate

Hungarian under-21 captain Mate Tuboly is attracting Championship interest, according to reports.

Swansea City and Watford are two sides who are said to be keen on the defensive midfielder, who currently plays for Slovakia outfit Das Dunajska Streda.

And, according to Sky Sports, the man who made 35 appearances for his team last season, has been watched closely by both of Pompey’s rival.
