'Sheffield United didn't deserve it': Portsmouth midfielder reeling from heart-breaking last-gasp loss

Blues midfielder’s disappointment after agonising late defeat to Blades

John Swift insists Sheffield United didn’t deserve their dramatic Fratton Park victory.

But he is adamant Pompey only have themselves to blame having failed to capitalise on many goal-scoring opportunities in the Fratton Park clash.

Andre Brooks grabbed a 90th-minute winner for the Blades, sliding the ball in at the far post following a counter-attack after a Blues free-kick.

It was incredibly harsh on John Mousinho’s men, who were comfortable throughout against Chris Wilder’s team, yet, crucially, didn't take their own chances.

In the first half, especially, Pompey were wasteful in front of goal - and now are reeling from successive Championship 1-0 defeats.

Swift told The News: ‘Sheffield United know they didn’t deserve that, we know that as well, that’s what makes it even worse.

‘If they scored in the 70th minute it would have given us a lot more opportunity to get them back and maybe get a winner, but to do it in the 90th minute in the way that they did as well - it wasn’t even like a great bit of play.

‘It was our own set-piece and they’ve won a few second balls after going long and end up putting it into the back of the net.

‘Ultimately, it’s down to us, we’re at home, we are on the front foot, we had a number of shots and we’ve got to be putting them away.

‘We take the chances we had in the first half and the game is like West Brom, we could have two or maybe three by half-time.

‘I don’t really look at XG and stuff like that, but I would imagine ours was quite high. It’s a really disappointing one for us to take.’

He featured until the 71st minute, before being replaced by Marlon Pack in midfield, and was a frustrated figure watching the subsequent defeat from the bench.

And he revealed the players immediately recognised the reason for their downfall in the dressing room afterwards.

He added: ‘That’s something we've got to think about and work on - and we all know that as well.

‘It’s the first thing we said in the changing room, it’s trying to take our chances, we know we're a good team, especially at home, but that was one of those days.

‘We did really well, so it was a really, really tough one to take in the end.’
