Portsmouth midfielder Luke Le Roux weighing up transfer moves to Sweden and Belgium - report
Luke Le Roux has featured four times for Pompey in pre-season, despite being told his future lies away from Fratton Park
Luke Le Roux is weighing up options from both Sweden and Belgium after the midfielder was told he was free to leave Fratton Park this summer.
However, a return to South Africa is not something the Bafana Bafana international is considering as he ponders his next move.
According to leading African publication soccerladuma.co.za, the 26-year-old’s priority is to stay in Europe, where he has been plying his trade since leaving SuperSport United in 2020.
The same report claims a return to Sweden is the most likely destination for the man who the Blues signed from Allvenskan side IF Varnamo for around £1m in July 2025.
Le Roux racked up 124 appearances for Varbergs Bois and then Varnamo in Sweden’s top flight and was considered one of the division’s top players before moving to Fratton Park.
His time at Pompey, however, has not gone to plan.
Despite the Blues’ outlay on his services and the three-year deal they handed the player, Le Roux made just 16 appearances in all competitions for John Mousinho’s side last term.
Seven of those outings came in the way of Championship starts, the last of which came on the final day of the season against Birmingham.
This summer Pompey have boosted their midfield options with the arrival of Estonia international Rocco Shein. Meanwhile, reports from Turkey over the weekend claimed a fee and payment plan has finally been agreed with Antalyaspor for defensive midfielder Jesper Cessay.
Le Roux was told in July that he was available for transfer, either on loan or on a permanent basis.
Speaking to The News, head coach John Mousinho said: ‘We have spoken to Luke about maybe trying to get him some game time elsewhere, that is something all parties are aligned with.
‘There has been interest in him and we’ve monitored Luke through pre-season in terms of making sure we give him the appropriate minutes and getting him as fit as we possibly can. We’ve needed him as well in the games, so it’s a case of just being patient with that and seeing what pops up.
‘I just think where we are - and where we were last season - he needs to play games. We had a conversation at the back end of last season about what that would potentially look like this year for him.
‘Luke’s great to have around the squad. When he played he came in and had an impact, but probably for our expectations and for Luke’s expectations last season, he didn’t play enough. It’s about making sure he maximises that opportunity.
‘We would probably look for a loan - but we are open to either a loan or sale.’
