'There's a stated policy' - the reason why Portsmouth would be willing to cash in on Adrian Segečić amid Birmingham City interest

Adrian Segečić’s Pompey future has been cast into doubt over the past few days amid Birmingham City’s interest in the attacking midfielder

A potential Pompey exit for Adrian Segečić in the dying days of the transfer window would be hard to stomach for some members of the Fratton faithful.

But with the Blues keen for a poster boy for their often-discussed player-trading model under owners Tornante, any significant bid for the attacking midfielder would prove hard to resist.

That’s the honest verdict of The News’ Jordan, who believes Pompey - despite being under no pressure to sell - would be willing to cash in on a player they signed for just £200,000 from Sydney FC in the summer of 2025.

John Mousinho told The News on Wednesday, any potential move for the Croatia under-21 international would need to give the Blues adequate time to replace a player who ended last season as the Fratton Park side’s top scorer and has already netted two goals in three games this term.

Whether or not that leads to an official bid and an offer which Pompey would consider acceptable remains to be seen.

But with Callum Lang the only player in recent years who has been sold for profit, securing a handsome financial gain on Segečić after just one full season at PO4 is something Cross believes would go down well at all levels at Fratton Park.

Speaking in the latest episode of Pompey Talk, the Blues writer said: ‘Ultimately, it's quite an emotive subject for supporters because he's been outstanding since he's been at Portsmouth.

‘He’s started the season in rich form and Pompey fans won’t want to see their best players move on.

‘However, there’s a stated policy of improving assets and selling them and, ultimately, it feels like Pompey haven't quite really nailed one of those big examples, a poster boy for that model, really, if you like.

‘I know we've had Callum Lang to a degree, but no-one where they’ve bought low and sold really, really high...

‘If £5m is slapped down on the table for Segs, do Pompey take that? I think they quite possibly do.’

All summer Pompey have been anticipating outside interest in Segečić and fellow prized-asset Terry Devlin.

A contingency plan is in place if serious interest materialises in either player in the coming days, while any profit would benefit the Blues not just now but in subsequent transfer windows.

Cross added: ‘He’s a great lad, Segs, and it will be one that people feel strongly about.

‘But if Pompey can get a significant figure, reinvest that money on maybe two, not necessarily this window, but maybe one, two, three players for £1m, £2m, £3m, then that would probably be something that I think Pompey would consider.’
