Portsmouth transfer blow as Sheffield United insist defender is 'not going anywhere'
Pompey have identified Sheffield United defender Rhy Norrington-Davies as someone who can solve their current left-back problem
Pompey face the prospect of missing out on Sheffield United defender Rhys Norrington-Davies.
Blades boss Chris Wilder insisted the Wales international is going nowhere at this moment in time, following his impressive performance in Tuesday night’s win against Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup.
The 27-year-old started at left-back at Ewood Park after being overlooked for United’s first two Championship fixtures against Birmingham and Swansea.
Norrington-Davies played 75 minutes of the 2-1 win and was only substituted after he ‘gassed himself out’ on only his second start for the Blades in 12 months.
On Sunday, The News revealed Pompey were keen on a loan move for the versatile defender as they continue to be without Connor Ogilvie following his knee surgery over the summer.
Wilder confirmed the Blues’ interest in the player during his press conference ahead of his side’s cup trip to Rovers.
Now, the Blades boss has cast serious doubt on whether the defender, who spent last season on loan at QPR, will be free to move to Fratton Park.
With Harrison Burrows currently unavailable and United currently exploring free-agent or loan centre-back options before the transfer window shuts on September 1, Wilder is open to giving Norrington-Davies his wish of more game time at Bramall Lane - particularly given his ability to play in the centre of defence.
Wilder told The Sheffield Star on Tuesday night: ‘As far as I'm concerned, Harrison's not available at the moment so we have to check to see where he is before the weekend.
‘Rhys can play in a three. That was his position. He's a Welsh international. He had a good season at QPR. His attitude's been first class. I thought his performance tonight (Tuesday) was absolutely first class when he just gassed himself out after 75 minutes.
‘He wanted to stay on, but for me, we just really opened that up to a potential muscle injury and I don't think that was fair to push him through.
‘So, a sensible decision and he came off and (was) completely delighted with his performance. As far as I'm concerned, (he’s) not going anywhere at this particular moment.
‘We want to be flexible. We want to sometimes go into a three, which we talked about.
‘We played that formation on Saturday. That was Reece's position when the team had the season where they got into the Premier League. That was his position when I first had him as a young kid. He fits that. He's a solid full-back, but he can play three at the back.
‘So, for me, Rhys is with us and we're delighted to have him with us.’
As well as Norrington-Davies, the Blue are also reportedly keen on Liverpool left-back Luke Chambers.
