Exclusive:Portsmouth's longest-serving player poised to deliver Blues boost

The former Spurs man has totalled 196 appearances and 13 goals since arriving at Fratton Park in August 2021

Pompey are closing in on a new deal for their longest-serving player.

And Connor Ogilvie is pencilled in to attend next week’s return for pre-season as he prepares for a sixth successive Fratton Park campaign.

The News understands negotiations over a fresh contract for the 30-year-old continue to progress encouragingly, with the left-back keen to extend his stay with the Blues.

Recruited by Danny Cowley on a free transfer from Gillingham in August 2021, the former Spurs Academy player has gone on to total 196 games and 13 goals.

Now he’s up to seventh on the list of leading Pompey appearance makers in the 21st Century, behind Sean Raggett, Ronan Curtis, Linvoy Primus, Gareth Evans, Christian Burgess and Matt Taylor.

Portsmouth return for pre-season next week

Pompey also remain optimistic over Swanson’s chances of staying on the south coast - yet it is understood his team-mate is nearer to an agreement.

John Mousinho’s squad are scheduled to return for two days of medical testing from July 25-26 ahead of the start of pre-season training on Monday, June 29.

And Ogilvie is expected to be among them as attention focuses on the 2026-27 campaign, representing Pompey’s third successive season in the Championship.

First-choice left-back

He has long been the Blues’ first-choice left-back - under Cowley as well as Mousinho - and totalled 33 appearances and one goal last term, despite two months out with a knee ligament injury.

The Blues are in the market to further strengthen the position, particularly with Jacob Farrell’s days appearing to be numbered after an injury-wrecked two years in England.

Nonetheless, Ogilvie continues to be a key first-team presence, having flourished in the challenge of the Championship following an uncertain start initially.

Despite his footballing education at Spurs, he had never played above League One when he arrived at Fratton Park in the summer of 2021, having rejected a new deal with Gillingham.

Ogilvie would go on to be part of the Blues team which claimed the League One title in 2023-24 to secure the club’s return to the Championship after a 12-year absence.

He has since firmly established himself at that level, proving his worth over the last two seasons with 77 league starts, including an impressive stint in the centre of Pompey’s defence last term.

Now the Blues believe Ogilvie will follow suit, thereby retaining their two longest-serving players - and League One title winners.
