Former Portsmouth favourite released by Championship rivals West Brom - and drops subtle hint over future

Jed Wallace came through the ranks at Fratton Park and netted 30 goals in 121 outings for Pompey prior to his 2015 departure.

Former Pompey favourite Jed Wallace is on the hunt for a new club.

The 32-year-old will depart Championship rivals West Brom at the conclusion of his current deal, which expires this summer.

It represents the end of his four-year stay at The Hawthorns, where he netted 16 goals and collected 16 assists in 150 outings in all competitions.

Wallace is one of three players to have been released by the Baggies, who finished four points above the relegation zone in 21st, as new boss James Morrison readies his squad for next term.

The winger will now be available to sign on a free transfer this summer as he eyes the next chapter of his successful career, which has seen him impress with Pompey, Wolves and Millwall.

But it was a frustrating final campaign with Baggies for the Fratton Park academy graduate as he struggled in front of goal, netting just two goals in 23 Championship outings.

This saw Morrison opt against extending his skipper’s stay and will subsequently become a free agent.

Jed Wallace pens emotional West Brom farewell

Wallace penned an emotional parting message to West Brom supporters on social media - and dropped a subtle hint over his future as he targets the ‘next step’ in his career.

A post on X read: ‘Baggies fans. My time at West Bromwich Albion has come to an end. I would like to personally thank all of the amazing staff behind the scenes and all of the players I’ve been lucky enough to work with over the past four years.

‘I’d also like to congratulate club legend Mozza (James Morrison) on becoming the next head coach of this great club and wish him all the very best in his tenure at The Hawthorns.

‘Finally, and most importantly, to you the fans. To be honest, and it’s hard to put into words what it has meant to me to captain this wonderful football club. Ever since Carlos (Corberan) gave me that honour, I have tried my utmost to represent you and the Albion in the best way I could.

‘There have been plenty of ups and downs throughout the last few seasons but I thank you all for your constant loyalty and support.

‘It’s something me and my family will never forget.

‘I now look forward to the next step of my career but will always keep a close eye on all things Albion. See you all again.’

Wallace came through the ranks at Fratton Park and made his Pompey debut during a League Cup defeat to Plymouth Argyle in 2012.

The forward went on to net 30 goals in 121 outings for his boyhood club and also claimed The News/Sports Mail Player of the Season award during an outstanding final campaign at PO4.

The former England youth international departed the Blues in May 2015, sealing a £250,000 move to Wolves.

Since then, Wallace went on to enjoy brilliant stints at Millwall and West Brom and refused to rule out an emotional return in an interview with The News in January 2025.
