Former Pompey quartet make surprise pre-season appearance

After the Blues reported back for full training this week, four former Fratton favourites began a camp of their own as they utilise the off season for different reasons.

Tom McIntyre, Josh Oluwayemi, Omar Bogle, John Marquis have all turned to the PFA (The Professional Footballers' Association) for support in their bid to find a new home.

The ex-Blues men have linked-up with the PFA-led training camp which allows out-of-contract members to keep their fitness levels up should sides come calling.

The quartet are four of 39 new free agents to join the 10-week programme based at Champney’s Springs in Leicestershire, which is now in its third year after being set up in 2024.

The camp allows players to have access to spa and gym facilities, strength and conditioning sessions, training and matches, with fixtures already being lined up.

Marquis is the most notable inclusion in the first week of the 2026 camp, having been released by Shrewsbury Town at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old, who made the £1m move to PO4 in 2019, netted 18 goals in 86 appearances during a two-year stay at the New Meadow.

The striker, of course, had two separate spells with the Blues, where he scored 37 goals in 126 outings in all competitions.

Marquis was also joined by Bogle, who is without a club following his departure from Crewe Alexandra in May.

McIntyre is another member to sign up for the camp as he looks to put his recent disappointment to bed.

Following his move to Fratton Park in January 2024, the defender suffered a season-ending injury on debut before struggling with form and fitness following the Blues’ return to the Championship.

Loan spells with Charlton Athletic and Bradford City followed for the 27-year-old, who had his Pompey contract mutually cancelled in January to allow him to join Aberdeen.

The ex-Blues trio were also joined by Oluwayemi, who has returned to England following a two-year spell in New Zealand with Wellington Phoenix.

The keeper made 39 appearances down under following his switch in 2024. The ex-Tottenham Hotspur man registered five outings during an 18-month stay at Fratton Park under Danny Cowley and Mousinho.
