New under the radar contract for rising Portsmouth star as stock grows

Toby Steward has risen through the ranks at Fratton Park and is currently enjoying a successful loan stint with St Johnstone.

Toby Steward has penned a new deal at Fratton Park.

The documents, which are made public every season, lists all transactions completed by English sides during a 12-month interval, including signings, player registration, contracts and scholarship applications.

Colby Bishop, Terry Devlin, Regan Poole, Nicolas Schmid, Ben Killip and Josh Murphy all penned fresh terms during that period.

Among those named on the list, however, is Steward, whose contract was not up for renewal prior to his loan exit to St Johnstone last summer.

He was due to be one of seven first-team members of John Mousinho’s squad who was expected to be out of contract at the end of the season, although Pompey did hold an option.

The News understands, though, Steward has since signed fresh terms to extend his stay until the end of the 2026-27 campaign, with the Blues also holding an additional 12-month clause.

The highly-regarded keeper’s stock is firmly on the rise following an outstanding stint on loan with Scottish Championship leaders St Johnstone.

The former Henry Cort Community College pupil has kept 20 clean sheets in 40 appearances in all competitions for the Perth-based side, who currently sit three points clear in Scotland’s second tier.

The young stopper has earned rave reviews north of the border, which has even seen some members of the Fratton faithful calling for first-team involvement on the south coast this term.

Steward’s fresh deal will now see him remain at PO4 until the end of next season at least, with Pompey holding the option of a further year.

Speaking in February, Mousinho was pleased with the academy graduate’s monumental rise this campaign and is expecting the young talent to challenge for a first-team spot next term.

The Blues boss told The News: ‘We’ve got an option on Toby. He will be here next year challenging for a spot -that’s the plan for Toby.

‘Now whether we then go for one more year on loan, I don’t know, it will depend on what the level is because I think he’s now stepped up really well. He’s part of a side who is absolutely flying this year in the Scottish second division.

‘We then have to see if we think the jump is from there to the Championship, or maybe to someone in League One.

‘I don’t know about that, but Toby has done well enough this year to come back and really warrant pushing for a place in that goalkeeping department, at least.’
