Vitor Matos provides key Swansea City injury update ahead of Portsmouth showdown

Pompey face second-placed Swansea City in the Championship this evening.

Swansea City will assess Stephen Eustaquio and Marko Stamenic ahead of Tuesday evening’s trip to Pompey.

Championship action continues at Fratton Park, with John Mousinho’s in-form troops facing Vitor Matos’ early fast-starters.

The Swans have enjoyed a brilliant start to the campaign and make the trip to the south coast sitting second in the standings, two points behind leaders Middlesbrough.

Swansea City injury update ahead of Pompey

Although Josh Key, who was loosely linked with a move to Pompey in the summer, returned to the fold against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, Stamenic was a surprise absentee for the 4-0 triumph.

Midway through the second half, Eustaquio, who opened the scoring against Rovers, limped off, with the midfielder unable to continue with a groin problem.

Matos explained the duo’s fitness will both be assessed ahead of this evening’s key Championship showdown at PO4.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, the Portuguese coach said: ‘Marko (Stamenic) before the game woke up with a fever and not feeling well. So that’s why he was out of the squad (against Blackburn).

‘Steph (Eustaquio) felt his groin and let’s see if it’s nothing wrong or if it's nothing serious. We still need to assess that.’

Their impressive opening threatened to derail after defeats to promotion rivals West Ham and QPR, which included a 5-0 romp against the R’s.

However, Matos’ men responded in style on Saturday, securing a 4-0 success at home to Blackburn Rovers.

And the head coach lauded his side’s reply and is expecting another tough test this evening.

‘We wanted to give a response, we wanted to make a return (to winning ways).

‘Of course, winning is always good but it’s more than that. It was the way we did it, that’s what we can control, that’s what we can show and the way we did the game and the way we started the game with the consistency, the desire, the precision, the concentration of details was really good to see.

‘We are all human beings. We know it was not a good performance (against QPR), we knew there were things we could’ve done better but there were things we did well. We just needed to grab those things and improve the other ones.

‘It’s a really hard league with important games all the time and hard games.

‘The consistency to keep fighting and keep being competitive against every opponent is really important. We did that, now we rest and then we’ve got Portsmouth.’
