In-demand Portsmouth flop's hopes of Championship stay dashed after revival with Middlesbrough

The Middlesbrough man and former Pompey loanee enjoyed a revival, but has now had renewed hopes of a stay at the Riverside extinguished.

His Pompey stay two years ago turned ugly and was eventually curtailed halfway through the season.

Sammy Silvera’s Fratton stint spanned 12 appearances and form which failed to reach expectations, after a loan move from Middlesbrough was agreed for the 2024-25 campaign.

And when travelling Blues fans made their feelings known over the Aussie winger at Bristol City at the end of 2024, there was no way back for the Socceroos man.

The 3-0 loss at Ashton Gate proved to be Silvera’s last Pompey appearance, but things didn’t improve for the 25-year-old as a similarly unsuccessful loan stint in League One with Blackpool ensued.

So not many people would have anticipated Silvera’s revival at the Riverside this term, in the final year of the former Central Coast Mariners man’s existing deal.

Silvera continued to feature for his side however, before suffering a metatarsal fracture in February which kept him sidelined for a couple of months.

He was unable to regain himself though the end-of-season drama under Kim Hellberg, consequently being named among six Boro players who were leaving when his club announced their retained list last month.

Silvera looked like he’d been offered an olive branch, however, with a suggestion in the north east he could yet be offered a deal to remain with the outfit he joined in the summer of 2023.

Talks were reportedly due to take place on that issue with the player viewed as a potential back-up option, but Teesside Live last night reported Silvera will now definitely be on his way.

The man whose last international cap came last September is said to have options at his disposal over what comes next for him.

Sides in the Championship, MLS as well as upwardly mobile League One sides are reportedly keen on signing Silvera for next season.

Mousinho said: 'He’s had a very positive start to the season. We always knew Sammy was a really good player, that’s why we brought him in here.

‘For whatever things didn’t quite work out but Sammy was sat here last year in a side that hadn’t won a game.

‘He probably didn’t have the best platform to necessarily perform as well. I’m sure he would’ve wanted to do a bit better here but ultimately we didn’t have a very good first half of the season and Sammy suffered for that as well.

‘It happens, it just happens. You’ve got a young player coming over from Australia, he had a pretty good season in his first season in the Championship, then came out on loan and they were a couple of loans which didn’t 100 per cent work out like he would’ve wanted them to work out.

‘You just have to be patient with players a lot of the time. I’m not saying that certain players have made it or certain players have thought this is it off the back of a couple of questions that have been asked.

‘You just have to be patient with some of these players, sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn’t.

‘He came into a side that wasn’t very good in the first half of the season, he would’ve been disappointed with some of his own performances and by the same token I don’t think we particularly played to his strengths.’
