The Portsmouth transfer state of player as window opens for summer recruitment
The transfer and Pompey squad lowdown as the summer transfer window opens for business.
The shutters finally come up on the summer window for player trading tomorrow.
But anyone hoping for an early rush of Pompey transfer activity will likely be disappointed.
Everything once again points to relatively quiet opening for business, as the club go about landing the targets they believe can improve John Mousinho’s squad.
So far 12 names have been linked with a move to Fratton Park, with the vast majority stories peddled without any credence.
We wait to see how things could potentially progress with Scottish defender Luke Graham, who the Blues keenly pursued in January.
The News understands, however, they have not yet gone back in for the Dundee man who will leave Dens Park this summer and has clubs across Europe on his trail.
With six centre-backs in the building that’s no great surprise, as the football operation need to trim its options in that department.
Ibane Bowat is the favourite to move on at present, with the former Fulham man clear he wants regular football next term. Josh Knight’s Fratton stay has been underwhelming to date, with the club’s hope Hayden Matthews and Madiodio Dia can step up in pre-season and vie with Regan Poole and Conor Shaughnessy, who is looking for a clear run of fitness.
At full-back, we wait for Connor Ogilvie and Zak Swanson to seal new deals, with hopeful noises being made both will do just that.
Jacob Farrell’s days at Pompey look numbered, with the Aussie generating interest from his homeland as well as clubs in England, Europe and the MLS.
Then there is Jordan Williams, who will not be happy with a repeat of 15 league starts next season, the lowest of the three right-back options.
We all know the situation over Terry Devlin, of course. Wrexham’s £2m bid was rebuffed in January, but are expected to renew their interest in the Northern Ireland international.
Rivals for the 22-year-old’s signature would no doubt drive up the price with the player well protected, with a contract until 2028.
The midfield department certainly needs attention, with Gibson Yah’s name an interesting one to emerge yesterday. The 22-year-old would add destructive qualities, but Mousinho is known to also want to bring some craft to the middle of the park.
Yah hailing from Holland aligns with the increasing suggestion that Pompey will once again look to overseas markets to maximise value from increased spending.
And the attacking department will evidently need major focus on that front.
Jed Wallace is not being considered, with it clear Pompey will focus adding pace and power to that area of the pitch.
What happens to Adrian Segecic will be key as the club's other major bankable asset at present.
There’s plenty of interest in the 22-year-old from the Premier League, Championship and across Europe, but with Conor Chaplin not returning there’s a potential home for last season’s top scorer in the No10 position he craves.
No doubt a suitor throwing £4m-£5m on the table would get Pompey’s attention, but another season like he ended the past one will see his valuation soar further.
A Championship-ready striker to vie with Colby Bishop is an absolute must and has been recognised as such.
There will be a probable wait for additions, but hopefully some business competed by the time the players return to training after testing on June 29.
But to what extent will the football operation be backed to carry out their squad reshaping? That’s the question all Pompey fans want answered.
There’s now noise over the club moving up the Championship spending table in the 2026-27 season, which is heartening to hear. After spending the last campaign in the relegation zone it’s also a must.
