Portsmouth stun promotion-chasing Millwall with second-half blitz
Pompey’s second-half super show stunned high-flying Millwall as they delivered a massive survival victory.
Three goals in quick succession from Gustavo Caballero, John Swift and skipper Marlon Pack saw the Blues pick up a huge 3–1 success in the capital.
Millwall had lost just one of their previous 12 games on home soil with a single defeat in their past 10 fixtures.
But Mousinho’s men turned on the style with their intensity and energy too much for Alex Neil’s side, as they opened up a six-point gap to the drop zone.
The lively Gustavo Caballero was the first to threaten, as he thumped a 20 yarder at goal - but Anthony Patterson pushed the effort wide.
Ebou Adams then should have done better with his header from 10 yards from Terry Devlin’s cross.
Millenic Alli wan then sloppy in possession with Femi Azeez bursting forward, but his deflected cross-shot was well held by Nicolas Schmid.
Pompey were threatening with Alli getting to the byline but Bishop couldn’t guide his cutback into the net.
The home side had the best chance of the half, however, three minutes before the break as Crama headed straight at Schmid from seven yards out.
Pompey responded with a positive Alli charge forward, but Bishop sliced his shot well wide from the edge of the box.
The opener came just 20 seconds after the restart as Caballero steamed through the middle. His first effort from the outside the box was well saved by Patterson, but the Paraguayan rifled the loose ball high into the net from a tight angle.
It got even better for Pompey after 55 minutes, as Alli drove to the byline and his cutback was met by Swift - who fired home sparking pandemonium among the 3,178 travelling Blues fans.
The home side gave themselves a lifeline in the 64th minute as Alli’s clearance was picked up by the home side, with Casper De Norre guiding a finish beyond Schmid’s dive from the edge of the box.
Pompey restored their two-goal advantage three minutes later, however, as Pack calmly slotted the ball home from 12 yards after Adams’ drive was blocked from Swift’s corner.
From there the Blues were comfortable, seeing the game out well to really get the party started after six minutes of stoppage time.
