Portsmouth boss reveals owner’s ambition following summit talks with Eisners

Pompey boss John Mousinho delivers his verdict on talks with the club’s owners and his feelings over where the club’s headed off the back of two days of meetings.

John Mousinho revealed Pompey’s owners are looking to build towards the Premier League after positive summit talks with the club’s owners.

But the Blues boss acknowledged that ambition is still likely years in the making, after two days of meetings with the key players at Fratton Park.

Mousinho has emerged enthused from those discussions and his position in taking the club forward, with eyes on the tone taken by the head coach amid Bristol City’s interest in his services.

The 40-year-old explained the details and timescale for challenging at the right end of the table are still to be defined, but he’s encouraged by what he’s heard from the Eisners.

Mousinho said: ‘We had extensive discussions Thursday and Friday.

‘They were never showdown talks and it was never issuing my list of demands. It was what we can do for the football club moving forward.

‘I wanted to hear what the owner’s ambitions are and then my take and Rich’s take, because we are here everyday and have a grip on what it’s going to take to get there.

‘It was about having that discussion. It was never about going “you now have £25m to spend”, because that’s the completely wrong way to go about it.

‘We wanted to take a view of the whole football club and what we can improve on. We’re in the embryonic stages of that, but we needed those discussions under the umbrella of what do we want to do?

‘Ultimately we want to try to build towards the Premier League - that was only thing we needed to hear from the last couple of days.

‘That doesn’t mean we’re going to say we’re going for the top six, but we are now going to have to look at timescale on that - and I think that’s years.

‘There’s no point in doing that and doing the club harm, or not being ready for it.’
