Rusty Portsmouth fall to disappointing pre-season defeat at League One Wycombe Wanderers

Pompey suffered a 3-1 defeat to League One Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

Pompey’s Championship preparations suffered a disappointing blow with a 3-1 defeat to League One Wycombe Wanderers.

Goals from Ewan Henderson, Cauley Woodrow and Micah Olabiyi gave the Chairboys a three-goal advantage before Thomas Waddingham struck late to pull a goal back for John Mousinho’s men.

But there was no appearance for landmark capture Marko Milovanovic, who completed his multi-million-pound switch from UD Almeria earlier this week.

The Blues fell behind early doors after being opened up defensively by a bright Wycombe attack.

Fred Onyedinma beat Jordan Williams on the right-wing before cutting the ball back into there danger area, where Henderson found plenty of space in the box.

After Mousinho’s men scrambled on the edge of the box, the midfielder was able to work an opening and slot past Nicolas Schmid to put the hosts ahead inside 90 seconds.

Michael Duff’s side did look threatening in possession, but were unable to slice through Pompey, who were slow to grow into the game.

The Blues’ best passage of the first half came after 30 minutes, when Williams picked out Eoin Kenny with a classy cross-field pass.

The Northern Irishman then found Terry Devlin, who slid the ball across the box to find Colby Bishop but Connor Taylor did superbly to block the powerful.

It was a tame end to the second half at Adams Park for Mousinho’s men, who went into the break a goal down.

But like the first half, the Blues conceded just seconds into the second period, with Woodrow capitalising on a mistake by trialist Arvin Appiah.

The left-back, who had only been introduced just seconds before, threw the ball to a Chairboys player from a throw-in before the ball fell to Aaron Morely on the edge of the box.

The midfielder then slid Woodrow through in the box, with the striker calmly slotting past Schmid.

The Austrian was called into action moments later, however, with substitute Micah Olabiyi firing an effort from the edge of the box. The keeper, who was at full-stretch, was able to parry over the goal-bound shot.

Wycombe continued to threaten the Blues goal and found a third on 73 minutes.

Odin Bailey was disappointingly dispossessed in the middle of the park by Jamie Mullins, who was then able to drive into the box and find Olabiyi.

The winger took one touch before past Schmid, who could’ve done nothing to prevent the effort.

There was still life left in Pompey when John Swift was denied by a brilliant save by the full-stretched Conor Hazard from a 20-yard free kick.

And then late substitute Waddingham was able to pull a late goal back when he headed home a John Swift cross from the right.

There were also second-half run-outs for the likes of Josh Knight, who returned to the squad after missing last Saturday’s draw to Bristol Rovers with illness, Ibane Bowat and Ebou Adams, who registered his first pre-season outing.

That proved to be the last of the action, with Pompey falling to a 3-1 defeat to League One opposition two weeks before their Carabao Cup contest with West Ham.
