Portsmouth approach update with John Mousinho ‘out of running’ for Bristol City post
Bristol City’s managerial hunt is narrowing with another Championship club eyeing John Mousino - here’s the latest from the Pompey end this afternoon.
Pompey are yet to receive an approach for John Mousinho as the field narrows in the Bristol City managerial race.
The News understands there has still to be any official contact with the Blues from potential suitors for their head coach’s services.
Pompey not received official approach for Mousinho
That comes with the Robins’ chase for a new boss reportedly narrowing to a shortlist of two today, with Bournemouth’s Tommy Elphick and Lincoln City’s Michael Skubala the duo in the fray to assume the Ashton Gate hot-seat.
An unnamed Championship club are also keen on the 40-year-old, as was first reported in The News on Saturday.
That hasn’t materialised into contact being made with Pompey, however, as the club continue their plans for a third campaign in the second tier.
Mousinho has been under consideration to succeed temporary boss Roy Hodgson, who left Bristol City at the season’s end.
England under-21 boss Lee Carsley was another name in the frame, but the club now appear to be focussing their search on Skubala and Elphick.
That’s after new sporting director James Ellis’ arrival was announced this week, with the club releasing a statement stating they would update on the appointment ‘as soon as we have news’.
There looks likely to be movement around the Championship in the coming weeks in terms of manager posts.
Stoke City boss Mark Robins is under pressure at the bet365 Stadium, after the Potters finished a disappointing 17th this term - their eighth successive bottom-half finish in the Championship.
There’s been more noise about Robins’ future in the role today, with reports Stoke are sounding out potential successors if he departs.
Blackburn Rovers, Watford and Burnley are other Championship clubs all looking for new head coaches this summer.
Pompey fans will be hoping the Bristol City development goes some way to ending the continuing uncertainty over what lies ahead for Mousinho.
Speaking to The News last week, Andy Cullen stated the club were pushing forward with plans for next season.
He said: ‘There’s been no approach from any club.
‘I'm aware of all the speculation, and there's obviously going to be. As I've always said, there's always going to be interest when you've got talented individuals in your business and those that are performing.
‘That comes across in football, it comes across in players, it comes across in coaches, but we've had no formal approach.
‘John's contracted to us, and we're all working at the moment in terms of planning through the summer, in terms of pre-season, in terms of recruitment, in terms of what the longer-term picture looks like as well for the football club.
‘There's nothing there for us to consider. There's been no approach. I can see everybody commenting, absolutely, but we've had nothing from any club in terms of any approach whatsoever.’
