Portsmouth boss set for playing budget clarity following positive owner talks

The Pompey boss met with Eric Eisner and key Fratton figures last week for summit talks at PO4.

John Mousinho is set to learn the finer details of the playing resources Pompey will be afforded next season after positive summit talks.

The Blues boss stated the onus is now on pinning down transfer and playing budget information, following successful meetings with the club’s owners.

Mousinho on recruitment: ‘The onus will now be on putting that in place.’

Mousinho left two days of discussions feeling the club are ready to push towards the Premier League, with director Eric Eisner in the country last week.

Upgrading Pompey’s infrastructure was a major area of focus, along with defining the direction of travel through the ‘extensive discussions’.

There were no exact numbers discussed for the transfer kitty and wages this summer, though Mousinho now expects the picture to become clearer on that front.

He said: ‘If the owner had said bottom six (was the target moving forward), at least we would’ve had that clarity on what we want to achieve, who we’re going to recruit next week and who we’re going to recruit in the summer.

‘It was about making exactly sure we knew what the remit was. Then we can work back from that and the onus will now be on putting that in place.’

Mousinho’s future remains the speculation, with the Pompey boss now afforded a period to reflect on his position and the way ahead amid Bristol City’s interest.

The 40-year-old expressed his appreciation for the club’s owners and their backing, with Mousinho understanding over how consideration has to be afforded to the way Pompey progress under the Eisners without stacking up debt.

He added: ‘I’m extremely fortunate, always felt extremely fortunate to manage this club in the first place. I’ve had an amazing three-and-a-half years here.

‘I've been backed by owners who put their faith in me, put their faith in the football club and put £60m into the football club.

‘There will always be people who say they’ve got a load more, but there’s plenty who won’t do that. They’re willing to lose money, but they want to do it in the right way.

‘What the club can’t have is a return to where we were. You can still feel the effects of what that did to the club with getting our training ground and Fratton Park up to scratch.

‘It’s all of these things which can ruin a club. Look what happened to Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester and West Brom. So we have to be careful how we do it and how we do it in the long term.

‘It’s like no other business, you lose money and everyone loses a lot of money.

‘But it’s about how you balance that off and make sure the club’s future is secure. If you’re reliant on owner funding all the time, the second you lose that you’re in trouble.’
