Season over: Portsmouth loanee suffers fresh set-back as injury frustration continues
Jacob Farrell has featured three times for Pompey following his 2024 arrival and has suffered a fresh injury setback.
Jacob Farrell has suffered a fresh injury blow while on loan with Western Sydney Wanderers.
It followed a wretched 18 months of injury woes at Fratton Park, which restricted the 23-year-old to just three outings after his 2024 arrival.
But the young Aussie is back in the treatment room after sustaining a fresh injury setback.
The full-back, who had missed the first four months of the Championship campaign at PO4 due to a problematic groin issue, suffered a recurrence of the injury and subsequently missed Western Sydney Wanderers’ past three A-League matches.
Farrell is now set to miss the season finale against Melbourne Victory on Saturday, with Wanderers looking to end the campaign on a winning note despite sitting at the foot of the standings.
Jacob Farrell’s frustrating Pompey career
Farrell arrived at Fratton Park in the summer of 2024 with his stock firmly on the rise after impressing in Australia’s top flight with Central Coast Mariners.

But a knee issue suffered soon after his switch forced the Socceroos U23 international to undergo surgery. He subsequently featured just once in his maiden campaign in English football.
After a start against Reading in August’s Carabao Cup defeat, a persistent groin problem once again halted his progress, with the setback forcing him to sit more than three months of action.
But prior to his February loan exit, Farrell came off the bench in the Blues’ 1-1 draw against Watford - totalling eight minutes of action at Vicarage Road.
The head coach said at the time: ‘With Jacob now back fit again, this loan provides him with the opportunity to get some valuable minutes out on the pitch.
‘We have a few options at left-back now and so felt it was the right decision for him. We will be watching his progress closely.
‘Hopefully he’ll be able to get plenty of games back in Australia, so he’s then ready to return and compete for a place in our side.’
Farrell is now expected to return to the south coast at the end of the season and still holds two years on his current Fratton Park terms.
