Former Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic man suffers devastating Huddersfield Town blow as issues continue

Former Pompey defender Jack Whatmough has featured eight times for Huddersfield since his 2025 move.

Jack Whatmough’s struggles continue after a wretched injury-hit stay at Huddersfield Town.

The Pompey academy graduate has had a frustrating stint at the Accu Stadium since his July 2025 capture from Preston North End.

A calf issue severely limited the centre-back’s game time during his maiden campaign with the Terriers and was restricted to just six appearances in all competitions.

And his disappointment has continued under new boss Martin Drury, which has seen him feature just twice for the League One outfit this term.

Despite starting the opening two matches of the season, Whatmough has been named in just one matchday squad since as he battled to maintain his fitness.

Former Pompey man suffers fresh Huddersfield blow

Although the 30-year-old was named on the bench against Bromley before the break, he was surprisingly missing from Huddersfield’s 2-1 triumph against Burton Albion on Saturday.

Drury confirmed the ex-Fratton Park talent suffered a fresh blow and is now facing another period on the sidelines after picking up a fresh calf problem in training during the international stoppage.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, he said: ‘Jack Whatmough’s injured again. He’s suffered an injury in his calf, which is frustrating for Jack, frustrating for us.

‘We trained on Saturday morning, and he felt his calf in the warm-up for training, and he dropped out. We’ve not got an exact diagnosis of that yet, but as with calf injuries, and Jack’s had some calf injuries in the past, they’re never a quick thing, so it’s really frustrating for Jack.

‘I feel for Jack, because I know how hard he’s working, and how much he wants to be back part of it, but unfortunately he’s broken down again, so we’ll have to look after him, and he’ll be out of our thinking for the upcoming games.’

Whatmough rose through the ranks at Fratton Park and was handed his senior debut by Andy Awford in November 2013.

After establishing himself as a regular under both Richie Barker and Awford, the centre-back would suffer a devastating knee injury in March 2015, which forced him to miss almost a year of action.

Knee issues would continue to hamper the 30-year-old during the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 campaigns, limiting him to just 30 appearances during that period.

Despite a brilliant start to the 2018-19 season under Kenny Jackett, which saw him appear 30 times, Whatmough would once again suffer a serious knee injury later that term, which kept him sidelined for 11 months.

In total, the defender featured 136 times for Pompey prior to his 2021 departure and went on to have spells with Wigan Athletic and Preston North End before making the move to Huddersfield in 2025.
