‘Thought it would be Portsmouth’: Sky Sports pundit delivers intriguing relegation U-turn ahead of Leicester City showdown

Pompey face relegation rivals Leicester City in a huge relegation showdown on Saturday afternoon.

Curtis Davies was convinced Pompey were going to be relegated from the Championship this season.

But the Sky Sports pundit has changed his prediction over the Blues’ future after an outstanding turn of form at a critical point in the run-in.

And the 41-year-old is adamant John Mousinho’s troops will ‘do a number’ over his former side Leicester City in Saturday’s huge survival showdown.

Just seven days ago Pompey were hovering above the drop zone after a disappointing eight-game winless run saw them hold a one-point advantage over the bottom three.

This has lifted Mousinho’s men four points of 22nd-placed Oxford United, with four games remaining in the campaign.

And Davies, who is covering the game on Sky Sports this weekend, has been impressed by Pompey’s upturn in form over the past week - despite initially fearing the worst in the final weeks of the campaign.

And the former Leicester City man is confident the Blues will ‘do a number’ of the Foxes this Saturday to all-but confirm their Championship status for another season.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, he said: ‘The squad they’ve got (Leicester City) should be doing better. They’ve got themselves into this situation.

‘I can only compare it to Spurs in the league above, constantly thinking they’ll jump out of it, they’ll jump out of it. And it’s just not happened.

‘There was a mini resurgence from Oxford, then there was West Brom and now it’s Portsmouth, having lost five in eight games before going back to back in the last two.

‘This game against Portsmouth is so big. Honestly Portsmouth and the form they’ve hit now, they’ll back themselves especially Fratton Park to do a number on Leicester and put more woes into those fans.

‘I thought it would be Portsmouth (to go down). It’s only a week ago I thought it would be Portsmouth because they were on a downward spiral.

‘They were losing a lot of games and then the fixtures in Coventry, Ipswich and Middlesbrough you just didn;t see them getting any points.

‘But the fact they’ve jumped out of it, you’re then thinking about West Brom with a points deduction.

‘Oxford will still go and then depending on whether this points deduction does come in or not, it’s going to be West Brom or Leicester.

‘If there is one, I think it will be West Brom, if not I worry Leicester could go.’
