‘Get him back, player we miss most, too much nostalgia’: The Conor Chaplin debate raging at Ipswich Town amid Portsmouth man’s potential January recall
The Fratton hero’s return hasn’t gone to plan so far, but that doesn’t mean he’s not wanted elsewhere ahead of a potential Ipswich Town January recall.
Pompey fans are desperately hoping for their Championship season to spark to life at Charlton Athletic.
And the same goes for Conor Chaplin’s Fratton homecoming, as the big Fratton favourite searches for the anticipated levels he’s failed to reach since his feted return at the summer window’s close.

But the Blues academy graduate’s quality hasn’t been forgotten at his parent club, following his surprise capture from Ipswich Town on a season-long loan deal.
There was jubilation at a deal many recognised as the most impressive Championship business of the final day of player trading, but the 28-year-old has failed to deliver a goal contribution from 13 appearances to date.
Ipswich fans are fully aware of what the attacking talent brings to the table, with there now growing calls to bring Chaplin back to Portman Road among what is being viewed as a lacklustre start to the season for Kieran McKenna’s side.
After relegation from the Premier League last term, Ipswich were fancied to bounce back at the first attempt, as they started the campaign as bookies’ favourites for the title. They go into this weekend’s meeting with runaway leaders Coventry in seventh place, however, with a single victory from their past four league outings.
It’s now less than four weeks until the January window opens, with Ipswich able to recall their player - as is standard in loan deals.
And, despite things not firing at PO4, that is a prospect many Ipswich fans are clamouring for after his 55 goals in 174 appearances for the club.
Ipswich Town Facebook fans’ page, The Tractor Boys, aired the prospect of Chaplin going back to Suffolk this week with a picture of the Worthing lad under the words: ‘This Ipswich team is crying out for Conor Chaplin’
It was a prospect which drew a strong response in the comments - here’s a selection of those views.
Crying out for Chappers and Sarmiento both who played their hearts out for the badge. DaniandShaun Baxter
Least he showed passion flair and fought for his club. Tammy Louise Golding
Too bloody right get him back Trevor Simpson
The guy who can’t get into the Portsmouth 11? Ryan Howes
‘Bring back Conor, Bring back Conor, Bring back Conor’ Geoff Stephens
Chaplin the ‘best 10’ for Ipswich
I agree definitely our best 10 at the club for sure we need him back and in the side too Sam Sammy Melton
Question: Let’s forget Chaplin played for us, if in January Town went and signed a player from Portsmouth that has got 0 goals and 0 assists would you all be saying great signing, cause I don’t think so. Jamie Long
Spot on, he’s the player we miss the most, he’s the link from midfield to forward line. Whenever our forwards get the ball they look isolated, Hirst is nowhere near the player he can be. For those saying he can’t get a game for Pompey, well that’s because he’s so far ahead of the rest of the squad that he looks lost. He’s a player perfect for the system/way we play playing for a side that isn’t capable of it! Craig Sean Grimsey
He's done nothing himself at Pompey. I'm not sure Chaplin is somehow going to solve our problems. We have issue in management, the recruitment department, coaching and the squad itself. If we were talking about Maradona returning then yes, maybe I'd feel like its a game-changing prospect but its Conor Chaplin. Tony S Mann
Chaplin doesn't get a start for Portsmouth . Too much nostalgia... cherish the memories, Paul Perkins
Definitely! In fact anyone with a bit of passion for the club, unlike some of the current ‘mercenaries’ we have. Andrew Crane
Sometimes in football it's about how much heart and fight the player has. Me, personally I think Chaplin has that in abundance. He bleeds blue, simples! Simon Burke
