Huge former Portsmouth favourite’s struggles continue after disastrous League One start

Christian Saydee scored seven goals in 73 appearances during his two-year Pompey stay.

Christian Saydee’s struggles have continued since his Fratton Park exit in 2025.

The striker, who scored seven goals in 73 appearances during a two-year stay with Pompey, was told he had no future on the south coast after the Blues secured Championship survival.

But Saydee has failed to replicate that early form and is now without a goal in more than 12 months as injuries wreck havoc to the new campaign.

The ex-Bournemouth man has been sidelined for more than two-and-a-half months after sustaining a thigh injury in the Latics’ pre-season opener against Manchester City.

The setback subsequently forced the forward to miss all of Wigan’s League One preparations along with the opening 10 matches in all competitions.

Although Saydee has returned to training, there remains no time frame over the former Pompey favourite’s comeback.

Speaking to our sister paper Wigan Today, head coach Gary Caldwell said: ‘Chris has been out there running on the grass, building up his running numbers.

‘But again, that will take time, as we go through all the correct protocols, to ensure he meets all the appropriate targets, before he gets into part training, full training, and then match minutes.

‘Having him back and available would be a timely boost and, as I said to all the players that weren't this week, we need everyone to keep working hard to be available to help the team whenever they're called upon.’

After being given the green light by John Mousinho to depart PO4 as he entered the final 12 months of his deal, the much-loved Saydee sealed a switch to Wigan for an undisclosed fee - penning a three-year contract.

The forward enjoyed a brilliant start in Greater Manchester, netting two goals and collecting one assist in his first seven outings, of which he started six times.

But, his form in front of goal dropped off as the Latics struggled in League One under Ryan Lowe and later Gary Caldwell.

Saydee subsequently failed to score in any of his next 34 league outings and has missed the opening weeks of the new season on the sidelines due to injury.

With his last strike coming against Stockport County in August 2025, the Pompey League One title winner is now without a goal in 13 months.

Caldwell’s men have also had a tough start to the new campaign and currently prop up the League One table, having one just one of their opening seven matches.
